Experience summer

Hiking

Hikers can linger in unique spots and enjoy breathtaking views down into the valley. Certified hiking trails such as the Franconian Mountain Trail or themed routes like the Jean Paul Trail lead walkers to the region’s most scenic places. The climatic health resort of Bischofsgrün is considered the hiking center of the area, where 17 certified hiking guides are on hand with help and advice. Calling all explorers: At the Waldhaus Mehlmeisel Nature Park Information Center, visitors can observe lynx, wildcats, red deer, and wild boar in the newly created wildlife park via elevated walkways and three viewing platforms.

Cycling

Top-class riding fun awaits cyclists of all kinds. All tours are designed so that families with children as well as experienced mountain bikers get their money’s worth. You can set off directly from your accommodation onto one of the many MTB routes that make the Ochsenkopf region one of Germany’s best biking areas. The Ochsenkopf Bike Park features a downhill track, skills course, flow trail, and cross-country trail. The central meeting point is the CUBE Test Center in the Bullheadhouse, located on the southern side of the Ochsenkopf in the Fleckl district.
At several rental stations in the Ochsenkopf region, guests can hire the latest CUBE hybrid bikes.

Family

Aspiring pirates can set sail on an exciting boat trip across the idyllic Fichtelsee, passing mysterious granite rock formations. Pure swimming fun: In Bischofsgrün, you’ll find one of the most beautiful heated outdoor pools in the Fichtel Mountains.

And that’s not all — the fun factor around the Ochsenkopf is huge! Feel the wind in your face on a fast-paced ride on the summer toboggan run or the new Alpine Coaster in Bischofsgrün at the northern cable car station. This mix of summer toboggan run and roller coaster takes guests downhill in two-seater sleds along a 1,000-meter track. A roundabout, several bends, and jumps promise pure action. The alpine adventure ride is open in (almost) all weather conditions.

Those looking for an adrenaline rush will find it on an exciting tour in the high ropes course directly at the Ochsenkopf North valley station, where a wide outdoor adventure program awaits children and adults alike.

Since July 2024, the Ochsenkopf has offered a new attraction – the Ochsenkopf Mountaincarts! Largely following the route of the old trough summer toboggan run, this new fun sport starts at the middle station of the new northern gondola lift and guarantees pure thrills (minimum age 12).

Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, guests can enjoy a variety of indoor experiences. A visit to the Grassemann Open-Air Museum is well worthwhile, where the Schwärzer House shows how farmers lived in the past. The historic Silbereisen Mine in Fichtelberg reflects the atmosphere of medieval mining. And not to forget the Automobile Museum in Fichtelberg, where around 200 exhibits from one of Germany’s largest private collections trace automotive history from 1896 onwards across three floors in two exhibition halls.

White winters on Ochsenkopf (1.024m)

Like a chain, the four villages of Bischofsgrün, Fichtelberg, Mehlmeisel and Warmensteinach nestle around the second-highest mountain in the Fichtel Mountains. Winter fun awaits here in the midst of unspoiled nature – whether snowshoeing across the summit, cross-country skiing on perfectly groomed trails, snowboarding or skiing downhill. The area offers ten kilometres of slopes, 80 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails, two toboggan runs, a snowboard park, two double chairlifts and 10 drag lifts, as well as two large ski schools with ski rental.

With around ten kilometres of pistes, the ski area is ideal for beginners and families. But experienced skiers will also enjoy a weekend ski trip here. The Klausen slope features a FIS slalom race course. Two cable cars take skiers to the 1,024-metre-high summit of the Ochsenkopf in just nine minutes. The intermediate north run, at 2.3 kilometres, is the longest alpine ski run in northern Bavaria. The easy south run is 1.9 kilometres long. Ten drag lifts, some offering floodlit skiing until 10 pm, open up additional slopes. Snow cannons ensure reliable snow cover on the northern slopes until the end of March. Tobogganing is possible on the south side at the Nord valley station and at the Bleaml Alm.

Two ski schools – ski courses for little ones

The Nordbayern Ski School is located directly at the valley station of the north slope. Around 140 ski instructors introduce guests to skiing. For the little ones, there is the “Nubi Club”. Teaching follows the method of “increasing ski lengths” – starting with skis that are 65 centimetres long. In Mehlmeisel at the Klausen lift, the Hottenroth Ski School promises lots of fun on the slopes, especially for young skiers and those who want to become one, together with “Juhuu” the moose. Several ski rental stations provide the latest equipment for all ability levels.

Away from the pistes, the Erlebnisregion with its four winter sports resorts – Bischofsgrün, Fichtelberg, Mehlmeisel and Warmensteinach – reveals the gentler side of a Franconian winter. Around 80 kilometres of cross-country trails between 600 and 1,024 metres above sea level invite visitors to go cross-country skiing, while wonderful snowshoe routes allow you to explore the snow-covered mountain landscape.

The well-groomed network of trails offers comfortable routes for leisurely cross-country skiers and beginners, prepared for the classic style. Challenging skating trails are available for sporty skiers and marathon enthusiasts. The moderately difficult 2.3-kilometre summit trail rewards visitors with magnificent views. Particularly scenic are the eleven-kilometre Königsheide trail and the 9-kilometre Königskron trail above Mehlmeisel. The nearly 15-kilometre lower Ring trail circles the Ochsenkopf. In the evenings until 8 pm, the 2.5-kilometre snow-covered night trail at the Bleaml Alm winter sports centre is illuminated. The cosy inn right by the trail is also a popular après-ski meeting spot. Every kilometre of the trail network is signposted, and detailed trail maps are available.
